Fiber Optic Basics

Fiber optic cable transmits data using light instead of electricity.

Compared to copper, fiber provides:

Fiber Optic Basics

Fiber optic cable carries data using pulses of light rather than electrical signals.

Instead of electricity flowing through copper wires, a laser or LED sends light through a glass fiber.

Because light is not affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI), fiber provides several major advantages over copper.

Advantages

  • Much faster transmission speeds

  • Can travel much longer distances

  • Immune to EMI

  • Excellent for high-speed backbone networks

Disadvantages

  • More expensive than copper

  • More fragile

Single-mode fiber uses one beam of light traveling through a very thin core.
