Chapter 9 Notes: Work and Kinetic Energy
Energy Overview
- Energy lets us "do work."
- Work is the transfer of energy by a force; it can be positive, negative, or zero.
- Units of work: Newton x meters = joules (J).
- Every system has total energy Esys.
- Energy can transform within a system without loss.
- Energy can be transferred between a system and its environment through work and heat.
- Work: Mechanical transfer of energy.
- Heat: Non-mechanical transfer due to temperature difference.
- Total energy of a system changes by the amount of work done on it.
- Isolated system: No energy transferred in or out.
Work and Kinetic Energy
- Work: W=F⋅Δs=FΔscosθ
- Only force component in the direction of displacement does work.
- Work is a scalar quantity.
- 1 joule (J) = 1 N⋅m
- Kinetic energy (KE): Energy of motion, K=21mv2
- Work-Kinetic Energy Theorem: ΔK=W
Work Done by Multiple Forces
- Total work: Wtot=W1+W2+W3+…
- Total kinetic energy: Ktot=K1+K2+K3+…
- Change in system energy: ΔEsys=ΔKtot=Wtot
Force vs. Position Graphs
- Work done is the area under the force-versus-position graph.
- W=∫xinitialxfinalF(x)dx
Restoring Forces and Springs
- Restoring force: Restores system to equilibrium.
- Hooke's Law: Fspring=−kΔs
- Δs = Spring displacement.
- k = Spring constant (N/m).
- Work done by a spring: W=∫x1x2−kxdx=−21k(x22−x12)
- Wbyspring=−21k(Δsf2−Δsi2)
Dissipative Forces and Thermal Energy
- Dissipative forces convert other energy forms to thermal energy (Eth).
- ΔEsys=ΔK+ΔEth=Wext
- Increase in thermal energy due to friction: ΔEth=fkΔs
Power
- Power: Rate of energy transfer.
- P=dtdEsys
- Unit: watt (W), 1 W = 1 J/s
- Power as rate of doing work: P=dtdW
- Power delivered to a particle: P=F⋅v=Fvcosθ
