[[Personality[[

  • Unassuming but calculated risk taker-Allowed McCarthy to act against him which worked in his favour.
  • Charming and confident- first president to use TV commercial for his reelection
  • Little Rock- Acted in accordance with the rights given to him
  • Tactful and discreet- led to his “hidden hand” policy in foreign affairs
  • Military background- led to his focus on the military as he rose to commander of Allied forces in 1944

[[Domestic Policies[[

{{Moderate Republicanism{{
  • Like passives he successfully decreased the role of the federal government and ended price control.
  • Interstate Highway System- single largest public works program in US history- this also stimulated the economy and made driving faster and safer- can be seen as similar to Roosevelt’s public works administration
  • Little Rock- sent federal troops to the High School- marked a significant change as this was the first time since the reconstruction that the President sent military forces into South to enforce Federal Law
  • Media advances- First president to allow TV cameras into his conferences. Also first President to have advertising agencies produce TV commercials for his re-election

[[Foreign Policy[[

{{New Look Policy{{
  • Aimed to provide “More bang for the buck” by cutting spending on conventional forces and increasing budget for air force and nuclear weapons.
  • Relied on covert operations to dictate his foreign policy
  • Eisenhower Doctrine - can draw continuity from Truman and the Truman Doctrine as this policy provided economic and military aid to countries in the Middle East threatened by communism.
{{Hidden Hand Policy{{
  • Relied on this policy through covert operations as an attempt to avoid taking responsibility for contentious intervention
  • Cover action in Iran- Helped restore Shah’s power- as an aftermath helped the US economy as the US now had equal share with British of the Iranian oil industry
  • Planned the Bay Of Pigs operation, however this was not carried out until Kennedy’s presidency
{{Space Race{{
  • After launch of Russian Sputnik the USA responded by forming NASA as a way to explore space for military potential as well as to gather intelligence on the USSR.
  • However can be seen as a fail under Eisenhower as by the end of his presidency the USSR were winning the space race
