Structure of the brain and limbic system
STRUCTURE OF BRAIN-
LATERALISATION- two brain hemispheres are functionally different and has its speciality eg left=language dominant and right=visual motor skills
LOCALISATION-certain functions eg language have certain areas of the brain eg broca and wernickes area
Frontal lobe- front of brain, contains pre frontal cortex and reasoning and high level cognitive thinking
contains BROCA AREA responsible for speech production
contains motor cortex- contralateral voluntary movement
Parietal lobe- further back, process sensory info, spatial awareness
somatosensory cortex- process sensory information from skin
Temporal lobe-sound info from ears
wernickes area understanding speech
Occipital lobe-back of brain, receives info from eyes and processes it, understand colour and movement
cerebellum- little brain, highly convoluted to speed up messages, balance and coordination and movement
LIMBIC SYSTEM-
Emotions
Amygdala - aggression and emotions
Hypothalamus - motivation, regulation homeostasis
SCN- circadian rhythms 24 cycle like sleep wake etc
Thalamus - filters sensory information from senses
Hippocampus - memory and spatial awareness
Pons
Medulla- regulates breathing and heart functioning
