IV Fluid Types and Setup
Types of IV Fluids
Lactated Ringers (LRS) and Norm-R (Norm R) are common maintenance IV fluids.
Our doctors may prefer LRS over Norm-R.
CRI Fluids
Sodium chloride bags (500ml or 250ml) are used for CRI's like dobutamine or FLK drips.
Setting Up IV Tubing
Keep IV fluid bags for a week, but change the extension set for each patient.
Connect the male end of the primary set to the female end of the extension set.
Remove the tab from the fluid bag and insert the spike, ensure it is seated well.
Pinch the line, fill the chamber halfway, and prime the fluids until fluid comes out the end.
Roll the line closed to prevent leaks and place it on a fluid warmer until use.
