4.4 - CompTIA A+ Core 2

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) straps

  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD): Refers to the discharge of static electricity when two objects come into contact and then separate, which can damage sensitive electronic components.

  • ESD straps: Wrist straps used to connect your wrist to a metal part of a computer to prevent static electricity buildup.

ESD mats

  • ESD mats: Specialized mats that help prevent static electricity buildup by providing a controlled grounding surface for workstations, thereby protecting electronic components from the harmful effects of ESD.

Equipment grounding

  • Equipment grounding: Refers to computer products connecting to the Earth - provides a low-resistance path for electricity to discharge safely. Direct electrical faults/paths away from others, never connect yourself to the ground, and don’t remove any previous ground connections.

Proper component handling and storage

Cable management

  • Cable management: Organizing cables to prevent tangling, increase airflow, and reduce tripping hazards. Avoid cable runs across a floor, and secure and cover cables (cable ties or velcro).

Antistatic bags

  • Anti-static bags: Specialized bags designed to reduce electrostatic discharge (ESD), and carry electrical components.

Compliance with government regulations

  • Compliance with government regulations: Ensures that all electronic devices and components meet safety standards and environmental requirements, which can include proper disposal methods for electronic waste and adherence to material safety data sheets (MSDS).

Personal safety

Disconnect the power before repairing the PC

  • Disconnect PC power before repair: Removing a PC from its power source before repairing it - reduces the risk of ESD/electric shock.

Lifting techniques

  • Lifting technique: Method to lift heavy objects to reduce injury - lift with your legs, and keep your back straight.

Fire safety

  • Electrical fire safety: Involves using carbon dioxide, FM-200, or other dry chemicals to stop electrical fires. Also, remove the power source.

Safety goggles

  • Safety goggles: Equipment used to protect your eyes from debris and chemicals (e.g., printer repair, toner, batteries), while working in potentially hazardous environments.

Air filter mask

  • Air filter mask: A Covering used to protect your nose, mouth, and respiratory system while working - use for dusty computers/printer toner.
