GreenEO WP2 Summary
WP2 Overview
The overall objective of WP2 is to utilize MTG-S and EPS-SG data for urban-scale air quality applications. This includes monitoring air quality across cities in Europe through advanced satellite technology.
MTG-S and Sentinel-4 Instrument
MTG-S (Meteosat Third Generation) is a geostationary satellite set to launch in July 2025 in collaboration with ESA and EUMETSAT. The Sentinel-4 instrument on MTG-S primarily focuses on monitoring atmospheric composition and air quality with high spatial resolution and hourly updates during daytime. It will monitor critical constituents such as NO$2$, O$3$, SO$_2$, and aerosols among others, covering mainland Europe.
EPS-SG and Metop-SGA/B
The EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation (EPS-SG) features Metop-SG satellites, with Metop-SGA being the first to include the Sentinel-5 instrument for trace gas observation. The launch of Metop-SG-A1 is expected around August 2025.
WP2 Tasks
- T2.1 NOx Emission Inventories: Led by KNMI, it aims to provide updated satellite-based NOx emissions at a high resolution.
- T2.2 uEMEP Modelling: Conducted by Met Norway, this integrates satellite NOx emissions into the uEMEP model for air quality assessments.
- T2.3 Local-scale Air Quality Mapping: Led by NILU, focuses on using hourly Sentinel-4 data to map surface NO$2$ and PM$2.5$ across Europe.
- T2.4 High-resolution Modelling: Provides hourly surface NO$_2$ estimations for selected cities using advanced modeling techniques.
- T2.5 Stakeholder Engagement: Engages institutions to promote data usage for air quality applications and visualization through the GreenEO data portal.
Expected Outcomes
- EO1: Enhance the uptake of environmental data from Copernicus and EUMETSAT satellites.
- EO2: Develop high-quality satellite data products for improved modeling and applications.
- EO3: Utilize applications for Earth system predictions and long-term climate monitoring.
- EO4: Contribute to the European cloud systems and Destination Earth initiative.
- EO5: Improve climate, weather, and environmental services across Europe using satellite-derived information.
