Cerebral Cortex

  • most visible and iconic part of the brain

  • big wrinkly thing

  • can think of it as a thin sheet of neurons crumbled up to fit in your head

  • the ridges from the wrinkles are called gyri and the grooves between them are called sucli

left hemisphere:

  • perceives sensory stimulation and controls movement for the right side of your body

right hemisphere:

  • receives sensory info from and controls left side of body

The two hemispheres don’t work independently, they actually pass info though each other with a massive bundle of neurons calls the corpus callosum

Frontal Lobe:

  • in front of the cerebral cortex

  • decision making

  • physical and mental

Parietal Lobe:

  • above and in front of the occipital lobe

  • processes information about touch

Occipital Lobe:

  • back of the cerebral cortex

  • processes visual info

Temporal Lobe:

  • lower side of each hemisphere

  • hearing and language

  • helps us understand word and sentences
