INCIDENCE
- There is a lack of information regarding the prevalence of Oilier's disease; however, a self-help group dedicated to the condition has been in contact with fifty families in the United Kingdom.
- It is possible for both sexes to be affected.
CAUSATION
- All cases of Oilier's disease have occurred on their own accord, so we do not currently have any evidence to suggest that it is transmitted genetically in any way.
- The primary issue lies in the cartilage that is located at the developing ends of the longer, more erect bones in the body.
- This includes the bones in the hands in addition to the longer bones in the arms and legs.
- There is currently no antenatal diagnosis that is known to exist.
CHARACTERISTICS
- In patients affected by Ollier's disease, the bones in many different parts of the body develop swellings.
- These are caused by an abnormally high level of cartilage growth in these positions.
- When the legs are affected, there is a possibility that the legs will bow inward, and the affected limb may also become somewhat shorter.
- This more recent condition is brought on by an interruption in the normal progression of bone growth.
- As the number of cartilaginous cells in the mass increases, bony swellings start to become more noticeable on the hands.
- There is no clear pattern that can be discerned in these bony growths, and it is possible for any of the long bones in the body to be affected in an unpredictable manner.
- The condition might only affect one or two bones, or it might cause a generalized deformity that affects many different parts of the body.
- To our good fortune, this pathological process does not affect the bones of the head or the spine.
- Although Ollier's disease can be diagnosed in infants, the average age at which a patient is given the diagnosis is between the ages of two and three years.
- At this age, the normally rapid growth will highlight any uneven developments in the skeleton that have taken place.
- During periods of rapid growth, this condition can cause discomfort for some of the children it affects.
- There is no involvement of any other body system in the disease known as Ollier's.
- It is essential that this condition be distinguished unequivocally from Maffucci syndrome, which is a condition that is very similar to this one.
- This latter syndrome is characterized by the presence of a large number of haemangiomata, which are defined as red naevi that range in size.
- Because there is a significantly increased risk of developing malignant changes in the bony lesions, the prognosis for this syndrome is significantly worse than that of Ollier's disease.
- In patients with Ollier's disease, there is a significantly increased risk of breaking long bones.
- It is possible that this occurrence is the very first sign that the condition is present.
- If the long bones in the legs are severely affected, then the individual may have a short stature.
- The onset of new cartilaginous lesions coincides with a reduction in the rate of growth.
- Ossification and a hardening of the lesions that are already present.
MANAGEMENT IMPLICATIONS
- If only a few of the child's bones are affected by the disease, many children who have Ollier's disease will have perfectly normal lives.
- Problems can arise when growth is either inhibited or asymmetric, for example: children who have this condition may have a more difficult time participating in physical activities at school.
- Children with abnormal bones are more likely to suffer from fractures than those with normal bones. (In cases where child abuse is suspected, it is imperative that Ollier disease be ruled out as a possible cause.)
- It is possible to experience pain, particularly during times of active growth. As long as it continues, this condition will require treatment with analgesic medications.
- Since there is no associated intellectual impairment, a child with this condition can receive their education in a regular classroom setting.
- The causes of the sometimes very noticeable swellings that can be found on the hands, legs, and arms of a student should be disclosed to the relevant teachers.
- They ought to also be warned that there is a possibility of experiencing periods of pain as well as fractures following relatively minor trauma.
- In cases of severe deformity, orthopedic intervention might be required to correct the issue.
- It is imperative that every bony lesion be thoroughly examined to rule out the presence of cancerous transformation.
- This symptom presents itself in adults with Ollier's syndrome on a much more infrequent basis than it does in children.
- If the bony changes become painful and quickly increase in size, an X-ray examination is required to be performed.

- Those who have Oilier's disease can anticipate a typical lifespan throughout their condition.
