• some are naturally more talented than others

• should be run on meritocratic principles of open competition

• should promote tradition, socialise pupils into shared cultures-national identity

• new right have a negative view-inefficient and failing both individuals and society because its run by the state:

• unresponsive and inefficient because local consumers have no say

• should be marketised

• brings greater diversity, choice and efficiency

• bring a parentocracy

• schools compete to attract pupils

• should affirm national identity-curriculum emphasises britains positive role in world history; teach british literature; christian act of worship

Chubb and Moe

• marketisation is beneficial to students-competition improves standard and efficiency

• private schools: more efficient-paying customer mentality-parents can complain if not good enough

• solution: schools shouldn’t get direct funding from the government

• instead parents get vouchers to spend on education and schools compete to attract customers

Two roles for the state

• schools have to compete based on the national curriculum: OFSTED, league tables, gives paents information

• Transmit a shared culture: emphasies Britains positive role in world history, intergrate pupils into a single set of traditions and cultural values

Evaluation

• real cause of low education standard-poverty and lack of funding

• Gerwitz-parentocracy is a myth-not all have a choice e.g poor,low liteacy

• Bartlett- marketisation disadvantages the working class students because thyre not not selected for the better schools

• Free schools-very selective

• tuition too high for working class

• Marxists-devalue working class and ethnic minorities
