Other Senses and The Skin Senses

Other Senses
  • Beyond vision and hearing, other sensory systems include: skin, chemical (smell, taste), kinesthetic, and vestibular senses.
The Skin Senses (Cutaneous Senses)
  • The skin is the body's largest sensory system.
  • It contains receptors for touch, temperature, and pain.
Touch
  • Touch detects mechanical energy, or pressure against the skin.
  • Examples of detected pressure include the lifting of a single hair or the pressure of a car seat.
