Endocrine Negative Feedback
Long-loop Negative Feedback
Definition: A complex endocrine reflex involving multiple components.
Components Involved:
Hypothalamus: The brain region that regulates various endocrine functions.
Anterior Pituitary: The gland that releases hormones in response to signals from the hypothalamus.
Peripheral Endocrine Gland: A hormone-producing gland located outside the brain that responds to signals from the anterior pituitary.
Mechanism of Action:
The final hormone produced by the peripheral endocrine gland feeds back to inhibit signaling at both the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary.
This feedback mechanism stabilizes hormone levels within the body.
Simple Endocrine Reflexes
Comparison with Long-loop Negative Feedback:
In contrast to long-loop pathways, simple reflexes involve a more direct feedback mechanism.
Components Involved:
Endocrine Gland: Directly senses the regulated variable and responds accordingly.
Examples of Simple Reflexes:
Insulin Secretion:
Controlled by blood glucose levels.
As blood glucose increases, insulin secretion is triggered to help lower glucose levels.
Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) Secretion:
Controlled by blood calcium levels.
When blood calcium levels fall, PTH is secreted to raise calcium levels back to equilibrium.
Feedback Mechanism:
In these simple reflexes, the regulated variable (e.g., blood glucose or blood calcium) itself provides the negative feedback that controls the release of hormones such as insulin and PTH.
