Chemistry Types of Reactions
Single Replacement
one element takes the place of another element in a compound
a + bc → b + ac
(a and b are elements, AX and BX are ionic compounds)
Ca + FeCl2 → CaCl2 + Fe
Double Replacement
the positive parts of 2 ionic compounds are exchanged
ab + cd → ad + cb
AgNO3 + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO3
Decomposition
starts with one molecule, ends with 2 or more (1 molecule broken down to 2+)
AB → A + B
2H2O → 2H2 + O2
Synthesis/Combination
start with 2+ molecules, ends up with one
A+B → AB
2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
Combustion
exothermic reactions in which oxygen combines with elements in organic compounds producing CO2 and H2O
CxHy + O2 → CO2 + H20
CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O + ENERGY
