layers of the earth

this contains each layer of the earths explained.

the globe is divided into 3 layers known as the crust, mantle and core.

the crust is the outer layer of the earth and the thinnest only having a thickness of between 0km and 60km. there are two types of crust

type one : continental crust

this is found beneath large land masses, it is less dense, thicker and mainly composed of rocks such as granite and sial.

type two : oceanic crust

this is found beneath ocean . it is the thin, dense layer found beneath oceans and is mainly composed of basalt and gabbro.

next we have the mantle found beneath the crust. this is a semi liquid layer of molten rock (magma) and is the thickest layer of the earth reaching to 2900km in thickness and reaching up to scorching temperatures of 1200 degrees.

after the mantle is the core divided into the outer core and the inner core.

the outer core is a liquid layer made from nickel and iron, it surrounds the inner core with 2200km thickness along with 5500 degrees heat.

under the outer core is the inner core which is the centre and hottest part of the earth. despite it’s intense heat, it is a solid entity made of nickel and iron reaching up to 6600 degrees.
