Bio 150 - Module 2.0-2.1

Energy is the capacity to do work

Chemical Energy is stored in molecules & released by Chemical Reactions. (Sugar, Fat, Muscle)

Potential Energy is stored. Ex Chemical Energy

Kinetic Energy is energy in movement (working out)

2 Laws of Thermodynamics:

1st. Energy is neither created nor destroyed

2nd. Total amount of energy in universe is always flowing

Chemical Reactions break bonds that hold atoms together

Exergonic - Exiting Energy

Endogenic - Need for energy

ATP is the most important of these processes

Catalysts - substances that lower the activation energy of a reaction

Enzymes - specific biological catalysts that regulate reactions within living cells.

Enzymes make processes easier

Enzymes can be used over and over again

Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions in a cell

Cellular reactions are linked through metabolic pathways
