The present study material is developed for the "Primero A" course within the Odontología (Dentistry) career at the Universidad Laica ‐Eloy Alfaro‐ de Manab. It covers the subject of Anatoma descriptiva (Descriptive Anatomy) under the guidance of Docente Dr. Cristhian Bustillos esp. Mg.PhD. The document was prepared by the following students: Campuzano Torres Ronald Yander, Mera Macias Pierina Lisbeth, Meja Solrzano Anahi Monserrate, and Kuonqui Intriago Cesar Stiven. The primary focus of this work is the generalities of anatomy, spanning definitions, classifications, terminology, anatomical planes, position, and a general conceptualization of the human skeletal system and body organization.

Anatomy is defined as the science that studies the structure of living beings and the relationships between their parts. In the specific context of human anatomy, it encompasses an analysis of the body ranging from the macroscopic level (structures visible to the naked eye) to the microscopic level. According to Moore et al. (20222022), anatomy constitutes the structural base of the human body, which is essential for understanding the higher-order organization of organs and bodily systems.

Systematic Classification of Anatomy

To facilitate the orderly study of the human body, anatomy is categorized into several specialized branches, following the framework proposed by Tortora & Derrickson (20212021):

  • Anatoma sistmica: This branch studies the body according to its functional systems, such as the skeletal (seo), muscular, and nervous systems.
  • Anatoma regional: This approach analyzes the body by focusing on specific geographic regions or areas.
  • Anatoma microscpica: This includes histology (the study of tissues) and cytology (the study of cells).
  • Anatoma del desarrollo: This branch focuses on the process of embryonic development.
  • Anatoma clnica: This relates anatomical structure directly to medical practice and clinical applications.

Essential Anatomical Terminology

Anatomical terminology serves as a universal language that allows health professionals worldwide to describe the body's structures with absolute precision. This clear communication system, as noted by Moore et al. (20222022), involves specific terms of relationship and comparison, including:

  • Superior (Upper) and Inferior (Lower)
  • Anterior (Front) and Posterior (Back)
  • Medial (Toward the midline) and Lateral (Away from the midline)
  • Proximal (Nearer to the trunk) and Distal (Farther from the trunk)
  • Superficial (Near the surface) and Profundo (Deep within the body)
  • Cfalo (Cephalic/Head) and Caudal (Tail/Feet)

Standard Anatomical Position

The anatomical position is the standardized reference used consistently to describe the human body. All anatomical descriptions are based on this specific posture to avoid ambiguity. The characteristics of this position are as follows:

  • The body is erguido (upright).
  • The head and gaze (mirada) are directed straight to the front.
  • The arms are positioned at the sides of the body.
  • The palms of the hands are turned forward (anteriorly).
  • The feet are placed together and directed straight to the front.

Anatomical Planes and Axes

Planos anatmicos are imaginary divisions that allow for the precise localization of structures in clinical studies and diagnostic imaging. There are three primary planes:

  • Plano sagital: Divides the body into right and left segments.
  • Plano frontal or coronal: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) segments.
  • Plano transversal (also known as Axial): Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) segments.

Associated with these planes are specific axes of movement and orientation: the Eje Laterolateral (left-right), the Eje Craneocaudal (head-to-tail), and the Eje Anteroposterior (also referred to as Dorsoventral).

The human skeleton is an organized collection of bones that provides the body's primary support and structure. It is composed of approximately 206206 bones. The skeletal system fulfills several vital functions:

  • Support of the entire body.
  • Protection of vital internal organs.
  • Facilitating movement in conjunction with the muscular system.
  • Production of blood cells (hematopoiesis).
  • Storage of essential minerals.

The skeleton is divided into two main components: the Axial Skeleton, which includes the crneo (skull), columna vertebral (vertebral column), costillas (ribs), and esternn (sternum); and the Appendicular Skeleton, which comprises the upper and lower extremities.

Hierarchical Organization of the Human Body

The human body is organized through a series of hierarchical levels that ensure coordinated function and the maintenance of homeostasis. These levels are:

  3. Nivel tisular (Tissue level)

  5. Nivel de sistemas (System level)
