Israel

  • The Palestinian Liberation Organization was created in 1964

    • Goal = Fought for a Palestinian Sates

    • Guerrilla groups = unorganized fighting

  • Yasir Arafat was a major leader of the P.L.O (1969 - 2004)

Munich Summer Olympics (1972)

  • 11 Israeli athletes murdered at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany by Palestinian Terrorists

  • Black September = Terrorists who wanted to promote the cause for Palestine

Historical Efforts at Peace

  • Camp David Accord (1979) - the 1st signed agreement between Israel and an Arab country, in which Egypt’s President Anwar Sadat recognized Israel as a legitimate state and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin agreed to return the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt

  • Meeting in United States with President Jimmy

  • Sadat was assassinated in 1981 by Moslem extremists

Intifada

  • A Palestinian campaign of civil disobedience against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip

Oslo Peace Accords (1993)

  • Israel granted Palestine self - rule in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank

  • Also called the Declaration of Principles

  • Meeting between Prime Minister Yitzhale Rabin (Israel) and Yasir Arafat (PLO)

  • Deal was brokered by President Bill Clinton
