Fluidized Bed Combustion:

- Burns granulated coal in close proximity to

calcium carbonate (CaCO 3

) limestone

- The heated CaCO 3. absorbs the SO 2 and

produces Ca 3

(SO 4

)2 → which can be used to

make gypsum wallboard (sheetrock)

*remember, sulfur & NO x cause acid rain

Controlling NO x :

Catalytic Converter:

- In cars...decreases NO x & CO emissions by

using a redox rxn that takes the nitrogen atoms

away from NO x

In industries…

- Burning coal & oil at a lower temperature &

controlling oxygen can decrease NO x emissions

Controlling Particulate Matter (PM)

*most common means of pollution control

Gravitational Settling: (simplest)

- Particles settle out to the bottom due to gravity.

- Ash disposed of in landfill

- CON: some ash contains high levels of metals & have

to go to a special landfill

Baghouse Filters:

- Fabric filter that allows gas to pass through but not

PM

- Some can remove 100% of PM

Controlling Particulate Matter (PM) cont.

Electrostatic Precipitators:

- Remove PM by using an electrical charge to make

particles coalesce (clump) together so they can be

removed

- Used in coal power plants

Wet Scrubbers:

- Uses water & air that separates & removes particles

- PM ends up in liquid/sludge

- Also removes SO 2

- Used in coal power plants

**Baghouse Filters, Electrostatic Precipitators, & Wet

Scrubbers all require additional energy input

Other Innovative Pollution Control Measures

➔ Decrease gas spilled at gas stations

➔ Decrease dry cleaning fluid evaporation

➔ Restrict lighter fluid

➔ Restrict VOCs and CO

➔ Regulatory & Conservation Practices

➔ Use of alternative fuels

Examples:

- Mexico City tried to institute an every other day

driving schedule to reduce VOCs & NOx

- China instituted strict driving restrictions during

2008 Olympics
