Understanding religon means seeing it through believers eyes. Avoids reducing it to psychology, economic, polities

Ontological

ask what religon is at its core. Focuses on it's true nature, not outside influences like psychology or society

Transcendence

idea that the sacred is completely seperate from everyday life. This idea is central to many religons like Judaism, Christiany, Islam

Immanence

idea that the sacred exist within the natural world. Common in religions like Hinduism Buddhism.

Incarnation

a pre existing divine person of Jesus Christ

Shaman

Mediate through human and spirits & have sacred powers. Do this through rituals & sacrifice to get desired outcome.

Nirvana

Ultimate goal in Buddnaism. Represents the exliction of desire, suffering and cycle of rebith

Four Noble Truths

  1. Suffering →> life involves suffering

  2. Cause - Desire & attachmant care suffering.

  3. End →› Suffering can be overcome.

  4. Path → 8 fold path = liberation

No-Self Concept

Budahist teaching that the self is an illusion, attachment causes siltering. Meditation & moral living lead to Niwar

Siddhartha Gautama

The Buddha real nome. He was founder of Buddhaism... adheived enlightment

Bodhisattva

A being who Stays to help others reach Nirvana. Driven by compassion and equality.

Mahayana Sacramental

Achieves enlightenment but postpones Nirvana. Interested in bringing through to the World

Prophetic

Teachings that reveal sacred truth through prophets. Focus on divine revelation through words

Mystical

Focuses on experience the sacred through personal experiences. Meditation is key in Buddhism, Hinduism.

Hafiz

A person who has memorized the entire Quran & can recite it from memory

Samsara

Cycle of rebirth/death in Hinduism/Buddhism, driven by karma. One's action in life shape their rebirth

Ka’ba

sacred core in mecca, islam. Mustim tace it during prayer due to it being a house of worship.

Mecca and Medina

holy cities in Islam. Birthplace of Muhammed sile of kaba. Medina is where he established 1st Muslim community.

Performative Language

Shapes reality through words that carry spiritual power. Seen in rituals/ceremonies
