MAE3270 Module 7 - Lecture 1: Assessment
Chapter 1: The Role of Assessment
Assessment plays a huge part in the 'plan, teach, and assess' cycle
Assessment should occur at every stage of the learning process
It allows us to identify misconceptions and differentiate the curriculum
Assessment helps identify individual student understanding
Assessment is important for reporting on student achievement
Feedback from assessment enhances student learning
Assessment also reflects a teacher's ability and effectiveness to teach
Assessment results and data inform future learning experiences
Chapter 2: The Plan Teach Assess Cycle
Diagnostic Assessment > Teaching & Learning > Formative Assessment > Giving Feedback > Reflecting & Planning > Summative Assessment
Some students may already understand a concept, so they don't need to repeat it
Formative assessment is done during the teaching and learning process
Feedback and reflection are part of formative assessment
Summative assessment is done after the teaching and learning process
Assessment strategies depend on the purpose for gathering data
Assessment strategies include anecdotal records, checklists, interviews, etc.
