male reproductive system

Gonads=Testes

Gametes =spermatozoa

Gonads produce gametes and secrete hormones

Accessory ducts-Epididymides, Vas deferens, urethra = for storage, maturation, and transport of sperm

Accessory glands-prostate gland, seminal vesicles, bulbourethalglands=secrete the fluid portion of semen

External gentitalia-Penis and scrotum

Spermatic cord-vas deferens, arteries, veins, nerves, lymphatic vessels ; pathway between scrotum and pelvic cavity

Ductus deferens-2, receives sperm from epididymis, transports to the ampulla

Urethra-transports semen to penis

Penis-erectile tissue, transports sperm to vagina, produces sexual sensations

Epididymis- tubular organ, sits along posterior side of testes, receives sperm from testes, site of sperm maturation

Head-body-tail

Testes-produces sperm, secretes testosterone

Septum- subdivide testes into lobules, formed by infolding of tunics albuginea

Seminiferous tubule- one per lobule, highly coiled. Sperm are produced in the walls then released into the lumen

Rete testes-network of tubules, collect sperm from seminiferous tubules, send sperm to efferent ductules

Tunica albuginea- whitish capsule surrounding the testes

Tunica vaginalis- 2 layered serous membrane encasing testes and epididymides

Scrotum- encases the testes, epididymides, and spermatic cord

Sperm pathway – testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory duct, urethra, penis

Layers of gonads-scrotum-tunics vaginalis-cavity of tunica vaginalis-tunica albuginea

Spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis

Spermatogenesis – diploid stem cell(spermatogonium)=Type A & Type B spermatogonia

Type A-cell division-replenish diploid

Type B- mitosis- primary spermatocytes-meiosis 1- 2 secondary spermatocytes-meiosis 2 -haploid cells(spermatids)- 4 spermatids- Spermiogenesis – spermatozoan(sperm)

Interstitial cells(leydig)- cells in the spaces between seminiferous tubules that secrete testosterone

Sertoli cell- create a channel for developing spermatocytes

Spermatozoa- acrosome- head- neck-midpiece- flagellum

Ampulla- widened end of vas deferens

Ejaculatory duct- transports sperm from Ampulla and fluid from seminal vesicles to the prostatic urethra

Prostatic urethra- passes through the prostate

Membranous urethra- between prostatic and penile urethra, passes through the urogenital diaphragm

Penile urethra(spongy urethra)- extends the length of the penis

Penis

Root-bulb-crus-urethra-shaft-glans-prepuce-external meatus

Root- bulb+crus. Attaches penis to body

Bulb- formed by corpus spongiosum

Crus- one on each side. Formed by corpus cavernosa

Corpus cavernosa- columns of erectile tissue running along the shaft. Engorge with blood during arousal to cause an erection

Corpus spongiosum-single column of erectile tissue running along the shaft and urethra. Becomes engorged with blood during arousal

Glans penis- tip. Formed by Corpus spongiosum, surrounds the meatus

Prepuce- covering
