Page 1: What is Hydroelectricity
Definition
Hydroelectricity is electricity that is made from moving or falling water. It is a very popular way to make power that can help people for many years. We use the energy from water, like when it flows down rivers or waterfalls, to turn big wheels called turbines. These turbines help change the water energy into electricity that we can use in our homes.
Page 2: Why It's Important and What We Should Know
Why Hydroelectricity is Good
Good for the Earth: Hydroelectricity is better for the environment than using fossil fuels like coal and gas. It helps us make power without polluting the air very much.
How We Make Hydroelectric Power
Dams and Reservoirs
Dams: To create hydroelectric power, we build something called a dam across a river. This dam holds back a lot of water to make a big lake, which we call a reservoir. When we let the water go, it flows through turbines and makes electricity.
Tidal Energy
Tides: We can also make electricity from the water that moves with the waves and tides. The moon and the sun help the water rise and fall. When this happens, we can use special machines to capture the energy from the tides and create electricity, especially near the sea.
How Hydroelectric Power Affects Nature
Even though hydroelectricity is good for the Earth, we need to be careful. Big dams can change local plants and animals' homes and move dirt around in rivers. We can help fix these problems by building special paths for fish to swim up and down rivers and taking care of their habitats. This way, we can keep making electricity while still protecting the environment.
