(39) GCSE Biology Revision "Salmonella and Gonorrhoea"
Overview of Bacterial Diseases
Key Concepts
Communicable diseases: passed from person to person via pathogens.
Pathogen: a microorganism that causes infectious disease.
Bacteria vs. Viruses: Bacteria can be killed by antibiotics.
Salmonella Food Poisoning
Causes
Caused by Salmonella bacteria.
Spread through ingesting infected food, usually prepared in unhygienic conditions.
Example: Using the same chopping board for raw chicken and other foods without cleaning.
Symptoms
Fever
Abdominal cramps
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Prevention
Vaccination: All chicken in the UK is vaccinated against Salmonella to control its spread.
Gonorrhea
Causes
Gonorrhea: a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
Transmitted through sexual intercourse.
Symptoms
Thick yellow or green discharge from the penis or vagina.
Pain during urination.
Treatment
Historically treatable with penicillin, but antibiotic-resistant strains are now common.
Current treatment involves different antibiotics.
Prevention
Use of condoms during sexual intercourse to prevent transmission.
Testing for gonorrhea for individuals with unprotected sex to treat and prevent further spread.
