Automatic Transmission 4

Valve Body Workstation Preparation and Navigation

  • Software Navigation Steps:

    • Access the lab laptop.

    • Navigate to the disassembly of subassemblies section, as the valve body is classified as a subassembly inside the transmission.

  • Bench Top Setup and Organization:

    • Obtain a fender cover.

    • Lay the fender cover out flat on the bench top.

    • Place the valve body directly on top of the fender cover.

    • Ensure the valve body is the only item present on the bench top.

    • Keep the workbench organized, neat, and tidy to maintain a smooth workflow.

  • Component Management Rules:

    • Do not bag any of the disassembled components.

    • All valves, bolts, and subassembly parts must be completely reassembled before leaving the lab session.

    • No valves or bolts are to be left out.

Valve Removal Procedures and Handling Guidelines

  • Tool Retrieval and Location:

    • Tools are located in a red Snap-on toolbox that is wheeled out into the center of the shop.

    • Picks and pocket screwdrivers are stored in the top drawer on the left-hand side of the red Snap-on toolbox.

    • Available tools include miscellaneous pocket screwdrivers, picks, and related hand tools required for extracting valves.

  • Tool Protocol and Workstation Rules:

    • Do not hoard tools; each group theoretically requires only one pick.

    • Only one person per group should remove a valve at a time, as hands will obscure the remainder of the valve body during extraction.

  • Handling Techniques:

    • Exercise extreme care and gentleness when manipulating valves.

    • Do not scrape or scarf the edges of the valves during removal.

    • If the valve removal process is unfamiliar, request a demonstration before attempting it.

Pump Disassembly and Reassembly Alignment

  • Inspection Requirement:

    • After removing the pump from the transmission case and disassembling it into halves, request an in-person review prior to reassembly.

  • Alignment Equipment:

    • Use the torque converter half located on the first bench outside in the shop area as an alignment fixture.

  • Step-by-Step Pump Alignment and Reassembly:

    • Separate the pump halves to expose the inner and outer members.

    • Place the pump assembly onto the torque converter half.

    • Align the inner member directly with the torque converter hub.

    • Align the feed holes across the pump components.

    • Bolt the pump tabs together while maintaining full alignment on the torque converter hub to prevent any offset or misalignment.

Reassembly Lubrication and Curriculum Schedule

  • Valve Pre-Lubrication Procedure:

    • Obtain small squirt bottles of transmission fluid.

    • Apply a small amount of transmission fluid into the top of each valve bore before reinserting the valve and associated parts.

    • Never reinstall valves dry; fluid application prevents sticking and maintains valve mobility, even on components that have been assembled and disassembled hundreds of times.

  • Safety and Next Steps:

    • Put on safety glasses before beginning work.

    • Following the completion of the valve body and pump lab exercises, instruction will transition to Chapter 5 material, which will extend into the following week.
