Repetition - repeat to help short term memory retain information and help retrieve it
Organization - process new information by categorizing and breaking down concepts into smaller segments
Mnemonics - memory device to remember new information (word association and acronyms, song and rhyme, etc)
Word associations
associate new info with prior knowledge (eg outermost later of epidermis is the stratum corneum, or the horny layer because tightly packed cells are similar to animal’s horn. Continually shed and replaced by new cells from underlying layers. Corn rhymes with horn, so corneum is the horny layer.)
Acronyms
(SHAPES = Sensation, Heat regulation, Absorption, Protection, Excretion, and Secretion).
Songs or rhymes
Rhymes can be simple (keep the air and hair moving while blow drying)

mind mapping - connections between ideas
Note taking - paraphrase and pay attention to “you need to know” directives
Key words and phrases and emphasize main points with colour coding or underlining

Where = Comfortable, quiet place with all necessary materials
When = estimate needed time, during when you feel most energetic and motivated, study during otherwise wasted time such as waiting in the doctor’s office
How = one section of chapter at a time and review key points, highlight key words and points, and test self
