Class2
Summary of Your Spanish Slides (Lección Segunda)
This lesson is all about the basics of introducing yourself and asking simple questions.
Key Points:
1. The Main Conversation ("HOLA!")
This is the core of the lesson. It teaches you a simple 6-line exchange to meet someone.
You Ask:
Hola! (Hello!)
¿Cómo te llamas (tú)? (What is your name?)
¿De dónde eres (tú)? (Where are you from?)
¿A qué te dedicas (tú)? (What do you do for a living?)
¿Eres (tú) [occupation] de qué? (What kind of [occupation] are you? e.g., "a teacher of what?")
Mucho gusto! (Nice to meet you!)
You Answer:
[Saludo] (A greeting like "Hola")
Yo me llamo [Nombre]. (My name is [Name].)
(Yo) soy de [País]. (I am from [Country].)
(Yo) soy [Ocupación]. (I am a [Occupation].)
(Yo) soy [Ocupación] de [Rama]. (I am a [Occupation] of [Field].) e.g., "Soy profesor de español." (I am a professor of Spanish.)
Mucho gusto! (Nice to meet you too!)
Tip: The words in parentheses (tú, yo) are often omitted in everyday speech. You can just say "¿Cómo te llamas?" or "Soy de...".
2. Sentence Basics (La Oración)
This slide shows you that Spanish sentence structure can be similar to English.
Estoy en Sevilla. (I am in Seville.) ->
Subject + Verb + Place¿De dónde eres? (Where are you from?) ->
Question word + Verb + SubjectSoy peruana. (I am Peruvian.) ->
Verb + NationalityTengo sueño. (I am sleepy.) ->
Verb + Noun(Literally: "I have sleepiness")
3. Geography Practice
This is a practice exercise to learn countries, cities, and how to ask Yes/No questions.
Key Question: ¿Está [City] en [Country]? (Is [City] in [Country]?)
Possible Answers:
Sí, Tokio está en Japón. (Yes, Tokyo is in Japan.)
No, Tokio no está en Japón. (No, Tokyo is not in Japan.)
No sé si Tokio está en Japón o no. (I don't know if Tokyo is in Japan or not.)
4. The Alphabet (El Abecedario)
It's very important to learn the Spanish alphabet because spelling is phonetic (words are pronounced how they are spelled).
Key example:
A: ¿Cómo se escribe tu nombre? (How do you spell your name?)
B: Be-ere-u-ce-e. (B-R-U-C-E)
5. Vocabulary (Vocabulario)
You are introduced to common professions. This helps you answer the question "¿A qué te dedicas?"
Examples:
artista(artist),estudiante(student),doctor(doctor),profesor(teacher),cantante(singer).
6. Grammar: Key Verbs
You saw three essential verbs for introductions. You will learn to conjugate these fully later.
LLAMARSE (to call oneself): Me llamo... (My name is...)
SER (to be): Soy de... (I am from...) / Soy estudiante (I am a student)
DEDICARSE (to dedicate oneself): Me dedico a... / Soy... (I work as a...)
7. Subject Pronouns
This is a preview of the words used for the subject of a sentence (I, you, he, she, we, they).
The most important ones for now are:
Yo = I
Tú = You (informal)
Él / Ella = He / She
Usted (Ud.) = You (formal) - not on the slide but very important.
8. Homework (Tarea)
The homework is to practice pronunciation and spelling by reading these long words out loud. This helps you get comfortable with the sounds of Spanish.
Your Very First Spanish Cheat Sheet:
English | Spanish (Question) | Spanish (Answer) |
|---|---|---|
Hello! | ¡Hola! | ¡Hola! |
What's your name? | ¿Cómo te llamas? | Me llamo [Your Name]. |
Where are from? | ¿De dónde eres? | Soy de [Your Country]. |
What do you do? | ¿A qué te dedicas? | Soy [Your Job]. |
Nice to meet you! | ¡Mucho gusto! | ¡Mucho gusto! |
1. The Two Most Important Verbs: SER vs. ESTAR
This is the biggest concept in Spanish. Both mean "to be," but they are used for different things. Your slides hint at this.
ESTAR (from "Estoy en Sevilla")
Use it for: Location and Temporary Conditions.
Think: "PLACE" and "STATE" of being.
Examples:
Estoy en Sevilla. (I am in Seville.) -> Location
Estoy cansado. (I am tired.) -> Temporary State
Está en Japón. (It is in Japan.) -> Location
SER (from "Soy peruana")
Use it for: Permanent Characteristics.
Think: "D.O.C." (This is a common memory trick)
Description: Soy alto. (I am tall.)
Occupation: Soy estudiante. (I am a student.)
Characteristic: Eres inteligente. (You are intelligent.)
(Also Origin: Soy de Perú. (I am from Peru.) and Time: Es la una. (It is one o'clock.))
For this lesson, just remember:
Where you are? -> Use ESTAR (
Estoy en...)Where you are FROM / What your job is? -> Use SER (
Soy de...,Soy estudiante)
2. Breaking Down the Introduction Conversation
Let's analyze the questions and answers you saw.
Question 2: ¿Cómo te llamas (tú)?
¿Cómo?= How?te llamas= you call yourselfLiterally: "How do you call yourself?"
Answer: Me llamo [Name].
Me llamo= I call myselfThis is the verb LLAMARSE. It's a reflexive verb, which means the action (calling) is done to yourself. Don't worry about the grammar term yet. Just memorize the phrase "Me llamo..."
Question 3: ¿De dónde eres (tú)?
¿De dónde?= From where?eres= you are (from the verb SER)Answer: Soy de [Country/City].
Soy= I am (from SER)
Question 4: ¿A qué te dedicas (tú)?
¿A qué?= To what?te dedicas= you dedicate yourselfLiterally: "To what do you dedicate yourself?" (What do you do for a living?)
Answer: Soy [Occupation]. (The easiest answer)
You can also say "Me dedico a la [field]." (e.g., Me dedico a la medicina. - I work in medicine.) but "Soy..." is simpler for now.
3. Pronunciation & Spelling is Your Best Friend
Spanish is a phonetic language. This is the best news for a beginner!
What you see is what you say. Unlike English, letters almost always make the same sound.
The alphabet slide is crucial. Practice it. Knowing the letter names (a, be, ce, de, e, efe, ge...) is how you spell your name and understand others.
Example from your slide:
"Be-ere-u-ce-e" = B - R - U - C - E = Bruce.
4. Vocabulary in Context: Professions
The profession list (artista, estudiante, doctor, etc.) is your toolbox for answering "¿A qué te dedicas?"
Notice many professions end in
-ista(artista, dentista) or-ente(estudiante, dependiente). This makes them easier to remember. For many jobs, the word is the same for men and women (el/la artista). For others, you change the ending (el profesor / la profesora). You'll learn this later.
5. Building Blocks for the Future: Pronouns & Verbs
The "Persona" slide is a preview. You don't need to memorize them all now, but know this:
The endings of verbs change (conjugate) based on who is doing the action.
Yo (I) -> soy, estoy, me llamo
Tú (You, informal) -> eres, estás, te llamas
Él/Ella (He/She) -> es, está, se llama
See the pattern? The verb changes (soy vs. eres). This is the core of Spanish grammar that you will practice every day.
Your Action Plan:
Memorize the 6-line introduction dialogue. Practice it in the shower, on your walk, everywhere.
Learn the Spanish alphabet. It will save you so much trouble later.
Learn 5 professions that are relevant to you or people you know.
Practice the SER vs. ESTAR rule. Ask yourself: "Am I talking about a location or a permanent trait?"
