America began as neutral, not wanting to enter a war they don’t care to fight. As well as that, Woodrow Wilson was pretty passive as he wanted the countries to be at peace. The first event that set off the Americans was when the German U-Boats killed 100+ americans while traveling into europe. This was not the main cause for america going to war but one of the factors. Along with this, the sinking of the ss sussex was another factor that led to the involvement of america. But ultimately, the last factor was the Zimmerman telegram which was a secret “note” sent to mexico proposing an alliance, emphasizing the need to go to war with the usa.
