Furthermore, an argument can be unsound but still happen to reach a correct conclusion by chance or due to faulty logic. For example: all birds can fly; a bat is a bird; therefore, a bat can fly. This argument is unsound because the premise "a bat is a bird" is false, yet the conclusion "a bat can fly" is a factually correct statement.
Formal Fallacies: Structural Errors
A fallacy is a flaw in reasoning that renders an argument invalid or unsound. These are categorized into formal fallacies, which result from the structure of the argument, and informal fallacies, which result from the actual content. Learning to identify these errors is crucial for critical thinking.
Formal fallacies involve errors in form that make an argument logically invalid. One such fallacy is Affirming the Consequent, which occurs when one incorrectly concludes that the antecedent must be true simply because the consequent is true. This is expressed as:
An example of this is: "If I fall in a lake, I will get wet. I am wet. Therefore, I must have fallen in a lake." This is invalid because there are many other ways to become wet besides falling in a lake.
Another formal error is Denying the Antecedent, which involves incorrectly concluding that the consequent is false because the antecedent is false. This is expressed as:

Other informal fallacies include the Straw Man and the Appeal to Emotion.
