Core Concepts of Human Development
Development: Represents the pattern of biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes beginning at conception and continuing throughout the entire lifespan. It encompasses both growth and decay.
Growth: Refers specifically to physical changes occurring from conception to maturity. These are quantitative changes in an individual as chronological age progresses, manifested as increases in size, height, or weight.
Aging: In a biological sense, refers to the progressive deterioration of organisms (including human beings) that leads inevitably to death.
Maturation: The biological unfolding of an individual according to an innate plan encoded within the genes (hereditary characteristics passed from parents to child at conception). It consists of developmental changes that naturally accompany age.
Learning: The process through which experience produces relatively permanent changes in thoughts, feelings, or behavior.
Environment: Represents all external, physical, and social conditions and events that can affect an individual, ranging from crowded living quarters to highly stimulating social interactions.
Approaches to Human Development and Lifespan Characteristics
Traditional Approach: Emphasizes extensive developmental change from birth through adolescence, little or no change during adulthood, and decline in late old age.
Life-Span Approach: Emphasizes continuous developmental change during adulthood as well as childhood.
Characteristics of Lifespan Development (Paul Baltes):
Lifelong: Development does not cease upon reaching adulthood; it continues across the entire lifespan.
Plastic: Plasticity refers to the sustained potential for change throughout life.
Multidimensional: Consists of biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional dimensions:
Biological Processes: Changes in physical nature, such as height and weight gain, hormonal changes during puberty, and cardiovascular decline approaching older adulthood.
Cognitive Processes: Changes in thought, intelligence, and language. Examples include progressing from mere sounds to a single word, then to two-word combinations, and eventually full sentences; memorizing a first prayer; singing Lupang Hinirang in flag ceremonies; imagining future careers as a teacher or pilot; playing chess; and solving complex mathematical problems.
Socio-Emotional Processes: Changes in relationships with other people, emotional variations, and personality development. Examples include responding with a sweet smile when affectionately touched, frowning when displeased, or throwing tantrums when unable to obtain or do what is desired. Aggressive children may mature into fine ladies or gentlemen, or take alternative developmental paths. Individuals may fall in love and become inspired for life, or experience betrayal, desertion, and desperation.
Intertwined Nature: Biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional processes are inextricably intertwined. Although studied separately, the effects of one process or factor on development are never isolated from the others.
Contextual: Individuals are changing beings within a changing world, constantly responding to and acting upon varying contexts.
Involves Growth, Maintenance, and Regulation: These represent the three core goals of human development. The specific prioritization of these goals varies across developmental stages.
Developmental Systems and Influence Cycles:
Each developmental arena influences others in complex ways. For example, a neglected child may suffer from malnutrition, which physically impacts puberty. That same child faces a heightened risk for delayed cognitive development, as significant language and intellectual development require nurturance prior to beginning formal school.
At school, this child is at risk of experiencing teasing and frustration, leading to behavioral problems that hinder positive peer relationships. Having learned not to trust caregivers, the child encounters substantial obstacles to social development. In adulthood, this individual may struggle to maintain a stable career.
People retain the capacity to grow and change at any stage. A single positive influence in a child's life can act as a catalyst to completely reverse a negative developmental cycle. Lifespan development remains a dynamic journey where individuals retain control over how they respond to events, even when they lack control over the changes themselves.
Developmental Stages Across the Lifespan
Santrock outlines eight developmental stages, which parallel the six stages outlined by Havighurst (with the distinction that Havighurst omitted the prenatal period and combined certain later stages into broader groupings).
Prenatal Period (Conception to Birth):
Approximate Grade/School Level: Not yet in school.
Key Characteristics: Development initiates at conception. The body, brain, and major organs undergo rapid formation. Maternal health, nutrition, genetics, and the prenatal environment exert major influences. Subdivided into the Germinal, Embryonic, and Fetal periods.
Infancy (Birth to months):
Approximate Grade/School Level: Infant care / Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD).
Key Characteristics: Characterized by rapid physical and brain growth. Infants develop basic motor skills, early communication patterns, sensory exploration, and strong emotional attachments to primary caregivers.
Early Childhood (End of Infancy to years):
Approximate Grade/School Level: Toddler / Preschool, moving to Kindergarten and the beginning of Grade .
Key Characteristics: Rapid advances in language, imagination, motor abilities, self-help capabilities, emotional regulation, and social interaction. Play serves as a primary vehicle for learning. Formal schooling commences toward the end of this period.
Middle and Late Childhood ( years):
Approximate Grade/School Level: Elementary School (approximately Grades , as categorized by DepEd).
Key Characteristics: Acquisition of literacy, numeracy, logical thinking, academic competence, self-control, and increasingly complex peer relationships. School achievement and peer integration become major developmental focuses.
Adolescence (About to years):
Approximate Grade/School Level: Upper Elementary to Junior High School (Grades ), Senior High School (Grades ), and possibly early College.
Key Characteristics: Triggered by puberty, bringing profound physical, cognitive, emotional, and social transformations. Learners expand capacities for abstract reasoning, strive for personal independence, build stronger peer bonds, and explore identity, values, careers, and future social roles.
Early Adulthood (Late Teens / Early through the ):
Approximate Grade/School Level: College / University, Graduate studies, workforce, and professional life.
Key Characteristics: Individuals assume full adult responsibilities and make core life choices regarding higher education, career paths, intimate partnerships, independent living, and family establishment.
Middle Adulthood (About years):
Approximate Grade/School Level: Adult professional life and lifelong learning.
Key Characteristics: Sustained commitments to work, family, and community. Adults experience gradual physiological changes while guiding younger generations and adapting to shifting family and occupational structures.
Late Adulthood ( years and above):
Approximate Grade/School Level: Lifelong learning.
Key Characteristics: Adaptation to aging-related physical changes, retirement, altered income levels, changing family/social roles, and prospective health issues. Continued learning, social engagement, accumulated knowledge, and maintaining meaningful relationships remain vital.
Developmental Tasks Framework
Robert Havighurst () defines a developmental task as a task that arises at a specific period in life. Successful achievement of the task leads to personal happiness and success with subsequent tasks, whereas failure leads to unhappiness, social disapproval, and difficulty with future developmental demands.
Infancy and Early Childhood (Ages ):
Learning to walk.
Learning to take solid foods.
Learning to talk.
Learning to control the elimination of body wastes.
Learning sex differences and sexual modesty.
Forming concepts and learning language to describe social and physical reality.
Getting ready to read.
Middle Childhood (Ages ):
Learning physical skills necessary for ordinary games.
Building wholesome attitudes toward oneself as a growing organism.
Learning to get along with age-mates.
Learning an appropriate masculine or feminine social role.
Developing fundamental skills in reading, writing, and calculating.
Developing concepts necessary for everyday living.
Developing conscience, morality, and a scale of values.
Achieving personal independence.
Developing acceptable attitudes toward social groups and institutions.
Adolescence (Ages ):
Achieving new and more mature relations with age-mates of both sexes.
Achieving a masculine or feminine social role.
Accepting one's physique and using the body effectively.
Achieving emotional independence of parents and other adults.
Preparing for marriage and family life; preparing for an economic career.
Acquiring a set of values and an ethical system as a guide to behavior; developing an ideology.
Desiring and achieving socially responsible behavior.
Early Adulthood (Ages ):
Selecting a mate.
Achieving a masculine or feminine social role.
Learning to live with a marriage partner.
Starting a family.
Rearing children.
Managing a home.
Getting started in an occupation.
Taking on civic responsibility.
Finding a congenial social group.
Middle Adulthood (Ages ):
Achieving adult civic and social responsibility.
Establishing and maintaining an economic standard of living.
Assisting teenage children to become responsible and happy adults.
Developing adult leisure-time activities.
Relating oneself to one's spouse as a person.
Accepting and adjusting to the physiological changes of middle age.
Adjusting to aging parents.
Later Maturity (Ages and over):
Adjusting to decreasing physical strength and health.
Adjusting to retirement and reduced income.
Adjusting to the death of a spouse.
Establishing relations with one's own age group.
Meeting social and civic obligations.
Establishing satisfactory physical living quarters.
Theoretical Issues in Human Development Science
Developmental science evaluates how, why, and in what patterns changes occur across time. Contemporary research rejects rigid either-or binary views, acknowledging that complex interactions shape developmental pathways.
Nature versus Nurture:
Core Question: Which exerts a greater influence on human development—nature or nurture?
Nature: Refers to biological and genetic characteristics inherited at conception. Includes genetic influences on physical traits, physiological maturation schedules, inherent temperament, and biological predispositions toward specific abilities or behaviors.
Nurture: Refers to the complete spectrum of environmental experiences. Includes family dynamics, parenting styles, nutritional access, formal education, cultural context, peer influences, socioeconomic status, and individual life events.
Modern Synthesis: Development is not determined by nature or nurture in isolation. Most traits and behaviors emerge from the ongoing interaction between biological inheritance and environmental experiences. For instance, a child may inherit a strong genetic potential for language, but achieving that potential requires environmental exposure to spoken language, adult interactions, books, play, and reciprocal communication.
Continuity versus Discontinuity:
Core Question: Does development proceed as a smooth, continuous progression, or does it unfold through distinct, qualitatively different stages?
Continuity View: Frames development as a cumulative, incremental process where skills build progressively over time. Metaphorically likened to a seedling gradually growing into a mature tree. OpenStax characterizes continuous development as a smooth progression where existing skills refine and become more advanced. Examples include gradual increases in height and weight, steady expansion of vocabulary, fine-motor skill refinement, and incremental growth in academic competence through practice.
Discontinuity View: Frames development as a sequence of qualitatively distinct stages. At specific transitions, individuals demonstrate modes of thinking or abilities that are qualitatively different from prior periods. Metaphorically likened to a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly, or ascending a staircase where each step represents a distinct developmental level. Classic stage models include those formulated by Piaget and Erikson. An example is a young child moving from concrete, immediate perceptual thinking to abstract, highly sophisticated logical reasoning.
Integrative Perspective: Development is rarely purely continuous or purely discontinuous. Rapid or sudden developmental transformations are frequently undergirded by gradual, continuous processes occurring over long periods beforehand. Puberty presents dramatic physical transformations, yet these visible changes are driven by underlying biological and hormonal shifts that build continuously across time.
