Necessary Life Functions

Maintaining boundaries – Separating the inside of the body from the outside environment.

Movement – Movement of the body, organs, and substances within the body.

Responsiveness – Ability to sense and respond to changes in the environment.

Digestion – Breaking down food into usable nutrients.

Metabolism – All chemical reactions that occur in the body.

Reproduction – Producing new cells or a new organism.

Growth – Increasing the size or number of cells.


Organ Systems

Integumentary System

Function:

  • Protects the body from injury and harmful substances

  • Helps regulate body temperature

  • Provides sensation

  • Helps prevent water loss

  • Works with the nervous system for sensation

Skeletal System

Function:

  • Protects internal organs

  • Allows movement with muscles

  • Produces blood cells

  • Stores minerals

  • Bone marrow

Interconnections:

  • Works with the muscular system to produce movement

  • Bone marrow works with the circulatory system by producing blood cells

  • Protects organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs


Muscular System

Function:

  • Produces movement

  • Maintains posture

  • Produces body heat

Organs/Structures:

  • Skeletal muscles

  • Smooth muscles

  • Cardiac muscle

  • Works with the nervous system to control muscle contractions

  • Works with the circulatory system to receive oxygen and nutrients


Nervous System

Function:

  • Controls and coordinates the body

  • Receives and processes information

  • Allows the body to respond to stimuli

Endocrine System

Function:

  • Produces hormones

  • Helps maintain homeostasis

  • Ovaries/testes

Cardiovascular System

  • Removes waste

Skeletal + Muscular = Bones and muscles work together to produce movement.
