Bio Vocab Flashcards

Energy - The ability to do work

Name two types of Energy -

Potential Energy - Energy stored in an object due to its position or state.

Kinetic Energy - Energy of an object in motion.

Chemical Energy - is the food we eat contains energy in the chemical bonds of organic molecules.

Mechanical Energy - a type of kinetic energy converted from chemical energy

Entropy - Relative amount of disorganization

Exergonic Reactions - chemical reactions that release energy, often in the form of heat, making them spontaneous.

Endergonic Reactions - chemical reactions that require an input of energy to proceed, resulting in products that have a higher energy level than the reactants.

  • ATP - energy currency for cells, used to transfer energy within cells for metabolism and various cellular processes.

ADP - adenosine diphosphate, a molecule formed when ATP loses one of its phosphate groups, playing a crucial role in cellular energy transfer and regeneration of ATP.

Metabolism - the set of life-sustaining chemical reactions in organisms, encompassing both catabolic and anabolic pathways that convert food into energy and building blocks for growth.

Catabolism - the breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, releasing energy that can be used for various cellular activities.

Anabolism - refers to the building up (synthesis) of molecules

Free Energy - Energy that is available to do work
