12.5 REVIEW

What drives climate patterns?

  • Why are the tropics warm and the poles cold? Why are the tropics wet?

  • Tropics are more warm because the angle of sunlight is directly overhead.

  • Tropics are more wet because Hadley cells push warm air cells towards the tropics and the air cools, which drops rain. The cold air is pushed towards the poles.

Proximate vs ultimate cause

  • Proximate = the mechanism behind behavior. Genetic, neurological, hormonal, skeletal-muscular

  • Ultimate = the why behind behavior. Evolutionary and historical, related to fitness

Foraging behavior

  • Fruit fly larvae tend to be rovers or sitters, which is genetic.

Life tables

  • A survivorship of 1 is no growth.
