Comprehensive Study Notes on Indian Mineral Resources: Iron Ore, Manganese, Copper, and Bauxite

Fundamentals of Mineral Resources
  • Definition: Natural substances; organic/inorganic origin; definite physical & chemical properties.

  • Classification:

    • Metallic:

    • Ferrous (iron-bearing): Iron ore, manganese.

    • Non-ferrous (iron-free): Copper, bauxite.

    • Non-metallic:

    • Organic / Energy: Plant/animal fossil origins (coal, petroleum).

    • Inorganic: Mineral ancestry only (mica, limestone, graphite).

  • Key Characteristics:

    • Distribution: Uneven;

    • Quality vs. Quantity: Inverse relationship (high grade = scarce; low grade = abundant).

    • Exhaustibility: Non-renewable; millions of years to form; no "second crop".

  • India's Standing: High global rank in iron ore, coal, manganese, mica; rich reserves of bauxite, chromite, limestone.

Iron Ore
  • Significance: Backbone of core manufacturing; India = Asia's largest producer, 5th5\text{th} globally.

  • Varieties (High to Low Grade):

    • Magnetite ('Black Ore'): >70%> 70\% iron; highest quality; naturally magnetic; Tamil Nadu (Salem), Karnataka.

    • Haematite ('Red Ore'): 60%60\% to 70%70\% iron; primary industrial ore; Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka.

    • Limonite: 35%35\% to 50%50\% iron; yellow-brown; fertiliser additive/alloying; Raniganj, Mirzapur, Garhwal.

    • Siderite: Lowest grade; inferior quality; Goa.

  • Key Applications:

    • Steelmaking: Consumes 90%90\% of mined ore; alloyed for strength/hardness.

    • Powder Metallurgy: Magnets, auto parts, high-frequency cores, catalysts.

    • Medical / Chemical: Radioactive iron tracers, Iron Blue pigments (paints, inks), Black Iron Oxide (polishing).

  • Major Centers & Supply Chains:

    • Odisha: Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh (supplies Jamshedpur, Rourkela, Bokaro, Durgapur, Asansol).

    • Chhattisgarh: Bailadilla, Dalli-Rajhara (supplies Bhilai Steel Plant).

    • Jharkhand: Chiria, Noamundi, Gua (Singhbhum district).

    • Karnataka: Bababudan hills, Kudremukh (1,000 million tonnes1{,}000\text{ million tonnes}; supplies Bhadravati Works).

    • Export Ports: Mormugao (Goa), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh).

Manganese
  • Nature: Hard, black transition metal oxide; vital blast-furnace smelting agent & ferroalloy ingredient (ferromanganese).

  • Primary Uses:

    • Metallurgy: Toughens steel, adds ductility, prevents rusting.

    • Chemical / Electrical: Depolariser in dry cells, bleaching powder, black enamel, glassmaking.

    • Biological: Plant nitrate reduction; activates animal metabolic enzymes (fats/proteins); supports Vitamin K & B-complex.

  • Export Markets: High global demand; USA, Japan, UK, France, Belgium.

  • Key Mining Districts:

    • Odisha: Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Koraput.

    • Madhya Pradesh: Balaghat, Chhindwara.

    • Maharashtra: Nagpur, Bhandara.

    • Karnataka: Sandur, Bellary, Shimoga.

Copper
  • Nature & Status: First metal manipulated by humans; non-ferrous, malleable, ductile; excellent conductor. India = critically deficient (import-dependent).

  • Primary Uses:

    • Electrical: Wiring, cables, generators, transformers.

    • Alloying:

    • Brass = Copper + Zinc.

    • Bronze = Copper + Tin.

    • Stainless Steel = Copper + Iron + Nickel.

    • Engineering: Automobile parts, defence components, roofing, plumbing, shipbuilding.

  • Key Mining Belts:

    • Madhya Pradesh: Balaghat (Malanjkhand belt - leading producer).

    • Rajasthan: Khetri belt (Jhunjhunu district), Dariba (Alwar district).

    • Jharkhand: Singhbhum district.

Bauxite
  • Nature: Hydrated aluminium oxide; found in tertiary strata & laterite rocks; sole ore of aluminium.

  • Aluminium Attributes: Lightweight, strong, ductile, corrosion-resistant, high electrical conductivity.

  • Key Uses:

    • Transport: Aircraft frames, railway coaches, auto bodies, marine hulls.

    • Electrical & Optics: Transmission cables, headlight reflectors, telescope mirrors.

  • Key Mining Districts:

    • Odisha: Kalahandi, Sambalpur.

    • Gujarat: Jamnagar, Kutch.

    • Madhya Pradesh: Amarkantak Plateau, Balaghat, Jabalpur.

    • Jharkhand: Ranchi, Palamau, Lohardaga.

  • Integrated Smelting Complex:

    • Renukoot (Uttar Pradesh): Largest integrated aluminium plant in India; sourced directly from Amarkantak (MP) and Ranchi (Jharkhand).
