Bukidnon Tribes

  1. Bukidnun Tribe

    Bukidnon or Montesses, means “mountain people” or “highlanders”

    Language - Binukid

    Spiritual Belief- Animism

    Agricultural Practices - Kaingin, small patches of land is cleared using fire.

    Datu - the one who leads the tribe.

  2. Manuvu Tribe

    Agricultural Practice - swedden (slash-and-burn)

    Way of life - Fishing, hunting, bee hunting, and trapping.

    Politics - Datu or Bai (chieftain) system : passed down through families

    responsible for maintaining peace and order, settling disputes, and leading the community.

    Lantung - The people of these four directions recognized a ruler.

    Bilew - Slaves who are treated like members of the family although still in servitude.

    Tempela - ridiculing someone for their low status or physical handicap is committing.

    Upakat (reciprocity) - Intervillage relationships are base in upakat.

    Gimukod ( Soul) - wandering away from the body maybe a cause of illness.

    Manuvu is originated from the word Mansuba:

    Man=people

    Suba=river

    Manuvu resides in the Southwestern part of Bukidnon

  3. The Higaunun tribe

    Higaunun means “people of the wilderness,” derived from “gaun,” meaning to be away from heat or water.

    Polygamy - marrying more than one husband or wife.

    The Higaunun tribe refers to their traditional meeting place for leaders as the "Tulugan"

    The term "Hinabol" comes from the Binukid word for weaving, "habol.”
