  • Major Dinosaur Groups:

    • Theropods: These bipedal carnivores included well-known species like Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor. They were characterized by their sharp teeth and claws, which adapted them as effective predators.

    • Sauropods: Long-necked dinosaurs such as Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus roamed the land, feeding on tall vegetation. Their massive size helped protect them from predators.

    • Ornithopods: These herbivorous dinosaurs, including Iguanodon and Hadrosaurus, were known for their beak-like mouths and ability to walk on either two or four legs.

    • Ceratopsians: Dinosaurs like Triceratops and Stegosaurus displayed distinctive features such as frills and horns, offering protection against predators.

  • Asteroid Impact: A significant impact event is believed to have occurred, with evidence suggesting a large asteroid struck the Yucatán Peninsula in present-day Mexico, creating the Chicxulub crater. This impact would have released an enormous amount of energy, leading to immediate and widespread destruction.

  • Volcanic Activity: Concurrently, extensive volcanic eruptions, particularly the Deccan Traps in present-day India, released vast quantities of volcanic gases like sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This would have resulted in acid rain, climate cooling, and environmental changes detrimental to life.   

    • Climate Change: The combination of the asteroid impact and volcanic activity is believed to have triggered a dramatic shift in climate, leading to a "nuclear winter" scenario.
