Fahrenheit 451 Honors 9 Summer Assignment
The Text
Over the summer, you need to either pick up a copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury from a King County Library or purchase a copy from Island Books or online. Your teachers strongly suggest that you have a physical copy of the novel, rather than a digital version.
The Assignment
As you read, you should take notes, annotate, and engage with the text.
When School Begins
When you arrive on the first day of school, bring with you a hard copy of the text (again, either purchased or checked out from the library) with handwritten annotations and notes. Sticky notes are a great option if you are using a library copy. The end of this document will outline what is expected of you for the annotations. You will be writing about this novel once school begins!
How to annotate and what to look for
Circle key words/phrases/lines
What words/phrases/lines strike you as important? Explain why.
Identify types of figurative language.
simile, metaphor, personification, etc.
Comments on how they help you better understand themes and topics
Underline lines that help you understand characters.
Different colors for different characters is a great visual.
Write in the margins what you learn about the characters based on the lines.
Put a box around what you don’t understand, or use a question mark.
Brief explanation of what doesn’t make sense.
Make connections to other parts of the text or other texts
Identify the repitition of words/ideas. Draw/highlight to connect them.
