cognitve interview- imprivng EWT

A01

Gieselman developed cognitive interior identifying four key principles that they believed would enhance recall of EWT compared to standard police interview

  • context reinstatement , report everything, recall from changed perspective, recall in reverse order

  • CR us when a personal mentally recalls the context of event for example time day weather. These details acts as triggers helping recall more info.

  • RE is when a person recalls every detail they can remember even those that seem insignificant

  • CP is when a person considers the event from someone else’s point of view for example the offender

  • RO where a person recalls the events in reverse order

A01 and A03

Gieselman examined effectiveness using students who watched videos of a simulated crime. Two days later participants were interviewed using standard interview and cognitive.

Those who were used in cognitive interview recall significantly more correct information than those using standard. This guests thar cognitive interview is more effective than a standard interviewer

A03

Limitation- original CI not all of its elements are equally effective or useful

  • Milne and Bull found that each of the four techniques used alone produced more information than the standard police interview. But they also found that using a combination of report everything and resonate context produced between recall than any of the other elements or combination of them. This confirmed police offices suspicions that some aspects of CI are more useful than others.

  • This casts doubt on credibility of the overall cognitive interview

Limitation- time consumer

Police offices may be reluctant to use CI because it takes more time and training that the standard police interview

  • more time is needed to establish report and a witness to be allowed to relax

  • Acquires special training and many forces do not have the recourses to provide more than a few hours

  • This suggest that the complete CI as it exists its not a realistic methods for police officers to use and it might be better to focus on just a few key elements
