In the clip from Amistad the Middle passage is depicted having brutal, inhumane conditions for the enslaved Africans.

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by the slaves to escape to the Northern states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists. The Second Fugitive Slave Law criminalized helping the escaped slaves even more. Any person who would positively interact with the Underground Railroad and help the escaped slaves would face serious legal consequences.
