External forms of social control

Controls society put in place to ensure we conform to expectations and rules

  1. Coercion

    • The practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats.

    • The physical coercion happens using force while non physical coercion is more about threats and phycological coercion.

  2. Fear of punishment

    • individual deterrence

      • punishment imposed to deter the individual from further offending

        • conditional discharge or suspended sentence

    • General deterrence

      • fear of punishment therefore preventing others from committing similar crimes

        • prison

        • Death penalty
