ELEMENTS OF ART

The elements of line

  • one of the seven elemts of art

  • Most basic element of art

  • “A moving dot”

  • Also the foundataional to painting even if associated with drawing

  • The most bvious use of line when its used to define the boundaries of a subject

  • Used to describe the details of the subject

  • Outlining is just the beginning!!!

  • Getting the size, balance, and proportion of the subject

Types of lines

  • horizontal

    • Infinity

    • Parallel to horizon and flow from left to right

    • Calmness

    • Ground

    • Body of water

    • Cloud

  • vertical

    • Shows structure

    • Stability

    • Move up and down without any slant

  • Diagonial

    • Shows imbalance

    • Lines that are slant

  • Zigzag and curved

    • Both show chaos

    • Lines that change abruptly

    • Z - chaos

    • Curved - soft edges, sense of softness, shows a sense of infinity, shows freedom to use any shapes or any form

  • implied lines

    • Not drawn or invisible, may “implied” line using broken lines

    • Usually for optical illusion

    • May not be visible but are implied due to contrast in valye or in the inclusion of broken lines

  • Contour lines

    • Using shades and details to create shadow

    • Line that folow the outlines of the subject, emphasizing shape and form

    • Use line and details to give detail and information

    • Adds depth to the image

  • Line quality/ line weight

    • refers to thickness of line To give info/impression of shadows

  • Cross contour lines

    • 3 dimentionality of an object

    • Flow over the form of the subject

    • Can be implied or visible

    • Used to shade a drawing with hatching and cross hatching

  • Hatching

    • Using directional linear strokes that do not cross over each other to create shading in a drawing

  • Cross hatching

    • hatching in two directions of lines

    • To create lighter shades and show that structure of ab object

    • Structure na solid

    • The greater the concentration of marks, the darker the value

Shading with line

  • By using lines, hathing, scribbling, we can create a shape

  • hatching (one direction)

  • Cross hatching

  • Circulism (finer, lighter aka scrbbling)

  • Contouring (we create shape)

Shape

  • flat and closed area craeted thought lines, area enclosed by other shapes, texturs, and colors

  • Form, however is a 3d subject in a 3d compotisition

  • geometric shapes

    • Precise edges and mathematically consistent curves

    • Precise edges

    • Can be measures and they are absolute

  • Organic shapes

    • Flowy and infinite

    • Shapes like trees, plats, coral,s flowers, animals, etc

    • No precise edges and measurement

    • Different forms and they vary

    • Unpredicatble and free flowing

  • Positive and negative shape

    • Shape that has details inside it, such as an outline of a human, with body features

  • Representational shapes

    • 3d shapes or it can be a persona, animal, object that is 3d but made into 2d to make an impression

    • Aka abtract shapes

    • Shapes that we see in signs or signals (like yung drawing of male or female sa cr)

ELEMENTS OF VALUE

Value

  • aka tint

  • Created by ADDING WHITE

  • Manipulation of light and dark

  • Create illusion of the mass and of the volume

  • Cration of dramatic effect and of the focal point within the art work

Tone

  • hue with GRAY added

Shade

  • hue with black added
