Importance of abilities:

  • Many people with disabilities have abilities that go unrecognised, as their disabilities become the main focus of concern.

  • We must study the disabiltities of children to learn how to help them maximise their abilities.


Disability vs Handicap:

  • Disability: An inability to do something. A diminished capacity to perform in a specific way.

  • Handicap: A disadvantage imposed on an individual.

  • A disability may ir may not be a handicap depending on the circumstances.

    • Vice-versa with a handicap.

  • We must not allow people’s disabilities to keep us from recognising their abilities or to become the focus of our concern that we overlook their capabilities.


Disability vs Inability:

  • All disabilities are an inability to do something, but not every inability to do something is a disability.


Exceptional learners: Learners that have special needs. They require special education if they are to reach their full human potential.


Special Education:

  • Specially designed instructions that meet the unsual needs of an exceptional student.

  • Possible forms:

    • Special materials

    • Specialized teaching techniques

    • Specialised equipment/facilities

    • Related services or additional support
