Defense Mech- Freud

Narcissistic- Projection, denial and splitting.

Projection- attribute feelings/thoughts onto someone else I don’t like a boy named Mike, that dude hate me I know it.

Denial- Avoiding becoming aware of a painful reality You have cancer. NO I don’t.

Splitting- All good or all bad. Black and white. NO grays The nurses in day are terrific. The nurses at night are bad.

Immature- Blocking, regression, somatization, introjection

Blocking- Temporary inability to remember I don’t remember his name, Its at the tip of my tongue.

Regression- Return to earlier stage of development My 7-year-old is wetting the bed again, since he found out he’s having a baby sister.

Somatization- Psych problems become physical I had a terrible headache during the exam.

Introjection- Unconscious imitation The resident acts and dresses like the resident he likes the most.

Anxiety- Displacement, repression, isolation of affect, intellectualization, acting out, rationalization, reaction formation, undoing, passive-aggressive, dissociation.

Displacement- emotion or drive shift to another My dad was angry at my mother and started yelling at us. The patient is mean because she had a fight with her spouse.

Repression-My idea or feeling eliminated from conscious. Forget and forget The child was abuse by his father and he does not remember anything.

Isolation of affect- Reality accepted w/o emotional response My father identified the victim and did not show any emotion.

Intellectualization- Use of intellectual process to avoid affective expression all the methods to get his diagnosis are really interesting.

Acting out- Emotional outbursts covers up reality Temper tantrums.

Rationalization- Excuses, excuses, rational explanations to justify behavior I didn’t pass the exam because it is harder than other ones. I didn’t get hired and okay, I didn’t want the job anyway.

Reaction formation- Unacceptable impulse transformed in its opposite Pyromaniac becomes firefighter.

Undoing- The actions of ‘reaction formation’. Acting out the reverse of the unacceptable behavior pyromaniac putting out fre.

Passive -aggressive- Unconscious passive hostility- She agreed to share her notes and then she just left after class.

Dissociation- separates from ones experience, like an outer body when a woman gets raped she floats and watches above.

Mature- humor, sublimation, suppression.

Humor- expression of feelings/thoughts w/o discomfort I gonna die forcer alone anyway haha. Making fun of oneself.

Sublimation- unacceptable impulse into acceptable channel. HEALTHIEST OF mechanisms.

Suppression- conscious forgetting (the only conscious mechanism) Forget and remember Id rather forget that my dog was run over by a car.
