MEAL: Main Idea (M)

  • M stands for Main Idea sentence in the MEAL acronym (Main idea, Evidence, Analysis, Linkage).
  • Each paragraph should focus on a single main idea.
    • Avoid packing too many important ideas into one paragraph.

Topic Sentence

  • The first sentence of a paragraph should be the topic sentence.
    • It indicates the topic of the paragraph.
  • Topic sentences provide readers with comfort and trust.
  • Topic sentences should act as an outline of the entire document.
    • Readers should understand the complete argument by reading only the topic sentences.

Strong Topic Sentences

  • Specific: Clear and focused.
  • Compelling: Engaging for the reader.
  • Forecasting: Indicates what will be proven in the paragraph.
  • Claim: An assertion without evidence.
    • The evidence will be provided in the next sentence.

Example

  • Weak topic sentence: There are some basic considerations about sidewalks and crosswalks that walkable cities need.
  • Strong topic sentence: Walkable cities require level sidewalks, curb ramps at corners, and clearly painted crosswalks.
