MEAL: Main Idea (M)
- M stands for Main Idea sentence in the MEAL acronym (Main idea, Evidence, Analysis, Linkage).

Topic Sentence
- The first sentence of a paragraph should be the topic sentence.
- It indicates the topic of the paragraph.
- Topic sentences provide readers with comfort and trust.
- Topic sentences should act as an outline of the entire document.
- Readers should understand the complete argument by reading only the topic sentences.
Strong Topic Sentences
- Specific: Clear and focused.
- Compelling: Engaging for the reader.
- Forecasting: Indicates what will be proven in the paragraph.
- Claim: An assertion without evidence.
- The evidence will be provided in the next sentence.
Example
- Weak topic sentence: There are some basic considerations about sidewalks and crosswalks that walkable cities need.
- Strong topic sentence: Walkable cities require level sidewalks, curb ramps at corners, and clearly painted crosswalks.
