Conventions of Standard English

In the English subject test, the reporting category "Conventions of Standard English" accounts for 51–56% of the total marks. Students are required to use their knowledge of standard English grammar, use, and mechanics to revise material in order to answer questions in this area.

The questions address three of the six elements of effective writing covered in the English test:

  1. Sentence Structure and Formation: Apply understanding of sentence structure and formation in a text and make revisions to improve the writing.
  2. Punctuation: Recognize common problems with standard English punctuation and make revisions to improve the writing.
  3. Usage: Recognize common problems with standard English usage in a text and make revisions to improve the writing.

The passages that are often underlined in the Conventions of Standard English questions require you to apply the conventions of formal written English to those portions.

Since this category makes up 51–56% of the English subject test, we will start by learning these fundamental ideas in order to (1) boost our results rapidly and (2) go to more intricate English rules and applications.
