Types of Chemical Reactions

  • synthesis = two or more reactants combine to form a single product

    • A + B = AB

    • 2H2O (g) + O2 (g) —> 2H2O (l)

    • metal nd oxygen combine to form a metal oxide

    • metal oxides and water combine to form metal hydroxides

    • non-metal oxides and water combine to form acid

  • decomposition reaction = a single reactant is decomposed or broken down into two or more products

    • AB —> A + B

    • production of non-metal oxide and water from acid or base

  • combustion = reaction of compounds that contain only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, with oxygen to form water and carbon dioxide

    • HCO + O2 —> H2O + CO2

    • complete combustion = when sufficient oxygen is present

    • incomplete combustion = when there is not enough oxygen available, produces carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide, carbon
