Module 1: Structure and Function of Cardiovascular System

Closed Loop Circulation: blood is cycled and does not leave

  • Galilei: blood circulates in a closed system

  • Harvey: systole and diastole

  • Shakespeare knew functions of the system

    • O2 transport

    • CO2 + waste removal

    • nutrients, hormones, fluid exchange

4 Cardiac Chambers:

  • left ventricle, right ventricle, left atrium, right atrium

Pulmonary Circulation (lower pressure)

  • takes deoxygenated blood from the heart to the LUNGS

  • oxygenated blood from lungs goes to tissue

  • low pressure because lungs are delicate

Systemic Circulation (higher pressure)

  • oxygenated blood from heart to body’s organs and TISSUES

  • deoxygenated blood from goes back to the heart

  • high pressure bc it requires a lot of force to pump the blood
