Poem Definitions

Strong Alliteration - the repetition of the same initial sounds (Ex. Sally Sells sea shells by the sea shore)

Simile - a comparison of two unlike things with using like or as (Ex. It was hot as hell yesterday)

Parallelism - the repetition of the same grammatical structure (Ex. I asked her how. I asked her when. I asked her why.)

Juxtaposition - it is the placement of two or more things concepts, characters, ideas, sometimes sidebyside to highlight there differences. (Ex. it was the best of time. it was the worst of time.)

Hyperbole - an exaggerated statement (Ex. I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.)

Metaphor - comparison of two unlike objects/things without using like or as; saying something is something else. (Ex. The wind is a soothing lullaby.)

Euphemism - a less offensive or harsher way of saying something (Ex. he passed over into the Lord's keeping.)

Inversion - to rearrange the usual syntax, order of words (Ex. Im so happy, happy I am.)

Onomatopeia - the word represents the sound (Ex. Boom!)

Allusion - a reference to (bible, famous writer, painting, etc.)

Synecdoche - the part reprezends the whole [often a body part - nec-neck=bodypart] (Ex. all eyes on me. lend me your ears.)

Metonymy - something closely related to something you actually mean. (Ex. emily the office wants you.)

Oxymoron - placing coderdicuaty words side by side for efferct (Ex. seriously funny; bitter sweet; defining silence)

Apostrophe - to directly address someone or something that is not presently there (Ex. Texas, i miss your wide blue skies.) [always an apostrophe after]
