Managing Distractions

  • The most likely cause of crashes for young drivers is having friends in the vehicle. Just one friend doubles the chances of a crash.

  • It's essential to manage friends and, importantly, your phone.

Ignoring Phone Notifications

  • Practice ignoring phone notification noises, whether calls or other alerts.

  • Students' attention visibly shifts to their phones even while driving upon hearing a notification.

  • One extreme example: a student let go of the steering wheel to reach for her phone in the back seat while the car was moving.

  • This highlights the intensity of phone addiction.

  • Start by ignoring notifications for short periods (10-30 seconds).

  • If parents call and it's important, waiting a few seconds is still advisable.

  • The goal is to train the brain not to immediately respond to the phone.

  • This is the first step in managing distractions and giving driving full attention.

Mindfulness

  • Adolescent psychologist Liz Dexter Mazza suggests noticing the urge to check the phone without acting on it.

  • Mindful awareness is key.

  • Noticing the urge makes you less likely to use the phone often, using it more strategically.

  • It prevents distractions while studying or doing homework.

Driver's Education Steps

  • Basic Steps to Get a Driver's License:

    • Driver's education (classroom)

    • Permit

    • Road lessons

    • Road test and license

  • The order isn't strict; some steps can overlap.

  • Road lessons can start with a permit and completion of Module 1.

  • Driver's education with TDA must be completed before turning 18.

  • Decide whether to do the road test with TDA or the RMV before getting the permit.

  • Book the TDA road test on the same day the permit is obtained, due to a six-month waiting list.

Module Information

  • Most modules involve slides and videos.

  • Module 1: Requires permit for road lessons.

  • Module 15: The final exam; requires completion of Modules 1-14.

Road Lessons

  • Involve 12 hours of driving and 6 hours of observation.

  • Separate from the 40-hour parent-signed driving requirement.

  • Nine lessons, each with 80 minutes of driving and 40 minutes of observation.

  • Lessons are 6565 per hour, totaling 780780. Payment for at least three lessons required upfront.

  • Spread hours out over the six-month permit period; avoid cramming.

Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV)

  • RMV Efficiency: Improved in recent years.

  • Preparation: Essential to minimize wait times.

    • Check the RMV website for required documents.

    • Pay all three fees together upon getting the permit.

  • RMV Website Access:

    • Directly, by searching for the RMV website.

  • Website Functions:

    • Access your profile after setting it up.

    • Prepare for the learner's permit appointment under "Driver's License and Learner's Permit".

REAL ID vs. Standard ID

  • REAL ID needed for domestic flights.

  • REAL ID requires one extra document compared to a standard ID.

Required Documents

  • Proof of Social Security Number:

    • Social Security card (unlaminated).

    • Alternative: W-2 form or pay stub with name and SSN.

  • Proof of Lawful Presence:

    • Birth certificate (long form with seal).

    • Alternative: Passport.

  • Proof of Massachusetts Residency (Two documents required for REAL ID):

    • Official letter from school (dated within 60 days).

    • Current-year school transcript with name and address.

    • RMV affidavit filled out by a parent.

    • Alternative: Social Security statement, bank statement, or recent pay stub.

Permit Requirements

  • Must be 16 years old.

  • Must have parental permission.

  • Clear of obligations to any state.

Obtaining a Permit

  • Start by filling out forms online at the RMV website and Make an appointment to visit an RMV.

  • Appointment must be on or after applicant's 16th birthday.

  • Options for the permit exam:

    • In-person at the RMV.

    • Online.

    • AAA offers some registry services; test online only and you can start the process up to tow weeks before 16th birthday

Fees

  • Pay three fees at the RMV appointment: 115115

    • Permit test fee: 3030

    • Road test fee (RMV portion):: 3535

    • License fee: 5050

    • Prepaying avoids extra trips and covers potential fee increases.

Permit Test

  • In person or online, if online desktop type computer or laptop needed due to camera and screen size requirements.

    • Rules include applicant must be fully on camera and alone.

    • Distances (in feet) from the RMV manual.

  • Common reasons for failing:

    • Questions about fines and penalties for junior operators (study the RMV manual).

Test format

  • 2525 questions total and 25 minutes given.

    • 1818 questions correct to pass.

    • Skip hard questions for later. Hard questions include fines and penalties.

  • If you fail:

    • At the RMV: Ask to retake the test (additional fee may apply).

    • Online: May need to wait a few days.

License Picture

  • Make a good impression.

  • Dress presentably; comb hair, brush teeth, etc.

Permit Handling

  • Obtain permit at RMV or if home print at home.

  • Keep it in good condition until your road test.

  • Must be in good legible condition for road lessons and road test.

  • Do not fold, crumple up, and keep in wallet, plastic bag is acceptable to protect from moisture.

Road Test Requirements (RMV)

  • Requirements:

    • Under 18: Completed driver's ed & parental permission.

    • Six months of clean driving with permit.

    • Valid permit (before it expires in two years).

  • Bring a check for fee if not prepaid to Road test site, or to pay the RMV directly.

    • Prepay for: permit fees, road test fees,license fee.

  • Decide before getting your permit if you'll use TDA or RMV for the road test.

TDA Road Test

  • Advantages:

    • TDA provides qualified car and sponsor.

    • Brush-up lesson beforehand.

    • Mellow test location (Mansfield School).

  • Fees:

    1. 3535 must prepay to the RMV

    • Additional 150150 to TDA (nonrefundable).

    • Retake fee: 7575.

  • Book road test the day you get your permit due to a six-month waiting list.

RMV Road Test

  • You provide your own car.

  • Car must have a center handle emergency brake and meet requirements.

  • Disable backup cameras and lane warnings.

  • You provide a sponsor (licensed driver).

    • After completion of Driver's ed it can take a week for RMV to process the Driver's ed certificate which then you can schedule A ROad test on RMV.

Road Lessons

  • Requirements to Start:

    • Permit entered in student portal.

    • Completed Module 1.

    • Few hours of driving with parents/qualified driver.

  • To Book:

    • Pay for a block of at least three lessons.

    • Do this in student portal, several steps for purchase driving lesson click, or can pay in Dollar sign for quick pay method

    • No permit listed you will receive permit # / Check on issue number.

  • After eligible what booking on calendar looks like

    • Check Calendar for Open and Available dates with green open slots to book.

    • No special day/times to book, slots appears on cancellations / emails

Pickup and Considerations

  • Pick up from home or school, drop off at the same location.

  • If plans change, notify the office.

  • Ensure the driver can find your house easily (house numbers, signs, clear directions).

  • Always have your phone number in the student portal.

  • Be ready for lessons.

  • Be flexible regarding observation.

  • Permit must be with you with picture and glasses restrictions apply.

  • Dress appropriately and comfortable for footwear, as dress code required no bare feet.. Close Toes Shoes.. Etc
