Chambers: Hollow spaces for blood
Valves: Keep a one way flow of blood. Ex: Ventricular contraction - Tricuspid and Mitral valves close, Pulmonary and Aortic valves open
Arteries: Carry blood away from the heart
Veins: Carry blood back to the heart
Papillary muscles: Control the action of the Chordae Tendonae
Chordae Tendonae: “Strings” that open and close the valves
The Tricuspid valve and Bicuspid (Mitral Valves) are called Atrioventricular Valves (AV Valves) because they divide the atria from the ventricles
The Aortic valve controls the flow of blood into the aorta
The Pulmonary valve controls the flow of blood into the Pulmonary Trunk
Regurgitation refers to the valves not closing properly and allowing a backflow of blood
Stenosis refers to a stiffening or narrowing of the valve preventing it from opening fully.
Pulmonary Circulation: Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs for oxygenation and returns oxygenated blood to the heart.
Systemic Circulation: moves oxygenated blood from the heart to the body and deoxygenated blood back to the heart
