  • youth culture : in the past socities had initiation rites to mark the abrupt transition from childhood to adulthood, sometimes ceremonies occur (ex. sweet 16, bar mitzvah)

  • grey period lasts much longer, adulthood comes much later for modern youth, even until the 20th century the term teenager wasn’t a thing

  • the concept of teenager as a life stage was ‘invented’ in 1945 with the NYT posting a teen-age bill of rights

  • william strauss and neil howe coined the term millennials, in 2005 their company sponsered a contest to name our generation, the winning submission was homeland generation because gen z starts around the time of 9/11

  • gen z : highly open to diversity, independent, concerned about student debt & affording post-secondary, more likely to go to church, more risk-averse, you dont remember 9/11.

  • music in the 90s was lots of grunge (pearl jam, nirvana), nirvana blew the market wide open with their new style & dark messages
